Alpheus acutocarinatus belongs to the Brevirostris species group within the genus Alpheus (Banner and Banner 1982). Type locality: Madura Strait, Bay of Labuan Tring, Sumbawa, Indonesia, types stored at the Zoölogisch Museum, Universiteit van Amsterdam, Amsterdam, The Netherlands (ZMA).
